week fifty nine >> " z cover" ZBOOK at LIB !

It's been a week now since I got back from LIB, and I'm still not quite back yet.  You may remember my post from last year about Lighting in a Bottle, a GEM of a festival created by The Do Lab which happens annually every memorial weekend.  I was again honored to be a live painter this year, as well as show piece in the LIB d i a l e c t Gallery.  More on that later... for today a story...

This year I brought a companion with me to LIB... my good ol' friend ZBOOK.  The ever weathered traveler, ZBOOK wanted to soak up the magic and splendor and ever expanding creativity of Lightning in Bottle.  ZBOOK wanted to be a part of it, and as always, a witness.  Here are some shots of ZBOOK up at LIB's Temple of Consciousness, the space up on a hill at LIB where countless speakers, teachers, visionaries, musicians, and artists share their gifts with us.

O so silently, ZBOOK stood upon the alter and stage and spoke its volumes.  Perhaps next year ZBOOK will bring Jennifer and I to this prolific space at LIB to voice the teachings of creative freedom and the power of collaboration that ZBOOK has revealed through all its years and travels.

In the spirit of this set of weeks we are sharing Z cover of ZBOOK, we are celebrating the object of zee book itself, this book that has mutated and grown and weathered and traveled in our satchels for so many years of our lives.  And still, it lives!  Still with us as we travel through life, the consummate witness to OUR continuing mutation, growth, and weathering... in the ever expanding composition that is our lives. Always reminding me that I am always free to create and discover who I am.

Introducing S.BOOK !

S.BOOK will be touring the country and then be on permanent exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Library.  click map for info!
A few months ago we told you (here) about our participation in the Art House Sketchbook Project... we are thrilled this week to have submitted our sketchbook for this national exhibition!  Announcing.... S.BOOK ! "S" for Sketchbook, S for Swap-book, S for STORYbook, for this is the first of our books that tells a page by page storyline... in the foreground that is... for in the background, the pages themselves still offer all the magic of the modality of creating we cultivated through ZBOOK. With S.BOOK we decided to take our work to the next level and use our brand of art making to empower a chosen story... and we chose to tell Z story of ZBOOK!  After all, the Sketchbook Project theme that we signed up for is "trading forever."  It is this trading of books, this trading of inspirations, creativity, stories, and trust that has given birth to ZBOOK.. and now S.BOOK which tells Z story of how it all began...

This past week has been a full court press to get S.BOOK done and ready for launch.  We had been swapping S.BOOK in its creation every couple weeks or so, but in the past days had intense sessions during which we'd swap it back and forth every 5- 20 minutes until finally we were in it simultaneously.  We were crafting the images and story right up to the wire of the postmark deadline, making our last marks and words right up until the last minute before closing out the postoffice! It was thrilling... and funny that we didn't really get the chance to behold its final form before slipping it into the envelope and releasing it into the universe, out of our possession, free to live and touch others.  Surely we will meet again, hopefully during it's traveling exhibition days, most likely in San Francisco in june, and after that we will find it 4ever at the Brooklyn Art Library.  and O yes, it will also be digitized for a cyber experience, never a replacement for a tactile experience, but special in it's own way... a light experience.

We barely took a few snap shots before sending S.BOOK off to Brooklyn... when the digitized version comes out we will be sure to share those images with you!  Until then enjoy these glimpses:

Go discover S.BOOK at a city near you!  Look in the "Trading Forever" section and let us know about your experience!

in sweet gratitude

on and on

Ya know what’s funny... I don’t believe we ever referred to zbook pages as ‘spreads’ before this here blog. It’s a delight to call them so, now, over and over again!

we (will) influence

On a journey I fly with this weeks spread,
across yellow headed meadows, along sparkling pumpkin fields,
through dreams of sound, below hallowed ground.

GO GO GO GOG GO GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO
Says the sprawl across the top... and in true form, it reflects my inner questionings needs... My body near collapsed yesterday, in fever fit...the day before, my son did burn high. Today, with weakness’ will, I washed some laundry, played checkers with Hallie, cut cantaloupe with Jack, wrapped up 7th grade mid-term reports, and on and on.

the eyes are the windows to the soul,
and fire burns.
Husband, Tony and I have been engaged in talks of GoD of late. There has definitely been reference, with immediate synchronicity, to the ‘eyes being windows to the soul (or GoD)’ reflectioning here in zspread of ‘we (will) influence’. (Speaking of this spread, I wish I had some close-ups, and perhaps I’m calling on a resurgence of this spread in another week, thus profound as it is in our estimation.).
Back to the fevers: Allowing the opportunity for let down, to permit a fever to burn hot, it’s such a rare gift...especially in adulthood.
As children, we can hope we were given this opportunity, to be nurtured in fever, to be permitted close-down. It is a gift to the body, and I daresay a necessity to the growing child. Fever burns and incinerates and hopefully does enough clearing to surrender new growth. It is incredibly stunning to see in a young child, this growth maturation after fever onslaught. Of course, fever in the head is a very serious thing, and when Jack’s fever was burning, we were lemon compress wrapping his feet and massaging his lower extremities to pull the fever into the body, out of the head a bit...it works!

For me, I slept and curled myself into covers and blankets. Finally after a full day, from mid-morn to post dinner eve, my fever broke, I was sweating. Headache and aches continued into midnight, then I chose to take 2 advil and slept till morn....
This kind of ill, when fever takes over to do it’s powerful work, always reminds me of the week I returned from 9 months abroad. Only once in my traveling mode during those months did I find a haven in which to engage in let-down, where my body expressed fever intensely to burn out some bugs. That week of returning, I dropped down into an all day fever, very hot, and allowed my body to heal itself with fire. It was the day I realized how valuable this fever reprieve is. And so, now, I value it with great gratitude, when it comes, and I offer it my thanks when it grooves with rhythms of life in my lane.
Peace to all in heart and soul, and Happy New Year loved ones near and far.

-J.G.
p.s.(l). did I ever mention that for some insane reason, this spread conjures feelings of bowling for me??! What is that!

One more note... this return I spoke of was in alignment with my Grandma Pearl's 80th Birthday Celebration.
Shout out and prayers to Grandma Pearl, now a stunning 92, as she regains strength following some heart-wrenching traumas!
Cheers and life to you Grandma!

swoon

There is a heady drunkenness bubbling all around in this spread of “Aguatulnico”. As if we, the viewers, are the senor, just emerged, from the martini glass. I personally prefer to take the stance of the winged bubble rider, floating up and out of the blue hue. The words at top “Traveling with style” apply directly to that sprite of fancy, decked out with her sweet umbrella. This tiny apparition, reminds me of myself I must admit. For a span of time, I styled around with the hippest umbrella; a purchase from an original cirque du soleil sighting – sections of red, blue, yellow and black. I tried to open it for a piece de resistance photo opportunity screaming down the drop of Splash Mountain – unfortunately, it did not survive, and to my dismay, the photo was awash as well.

Aguatulnico

Cec and I were invested in a triple threat theme park extravaganza at that time – episodes full of story. For now, I leave this page, a favorite of mine, for its sparkle and lunacy, with these deciphered words:
Luna, every woman’s friend,

To me, thy goodness, condescend
Let me, this night in visions see,
Emblems of my destiny.

How do I get there?
Sensing the road
Where can I get this?
In my dreams.
Be well and Blessings –J.G.

Jump!

postcards a flurry click to view
Today is an exciting day for ZBOOK! Today we speak at UC Santa Barbara, accepting the invitation from our former Professor Kip Fulbeck to speak at his Personal Narrative class, which we took 14 years ago, the same year that both our friendship and ZBOOK was birthed. In preparation for our presentation/performance I have been going through our mass collection of postcards which we've sent each other since that year of 1996. All of our stories could be told just with these postcards alone, they are rich with history gleaned from the date, place of origin, destination address, particular stamps, adorning details such as stickers and drawings, image on card itself, and of course the words written therein.

alice postacard -C to J- 6 July 1999
I came across this Alice postcard and smiled, as Jennifer brought the Alice from Z page this week, "All and Everything," to light in her last post. It's fascinating to re-discover a postcard you've written... it's as if seeing it for the first time! For truly we write 'em and mail 'em and only the recipient gets to truly become familiar with 'em. This postcard was written on July 6, 1998 from Boulder, Colorado by me to Jennifer who was living her summer in Santa Cruz and received my postcards via our PSL buddies Hutch, Coach, and Millar's house in the Redwood Estates mountains of Los Gatos, CA. Vinh and I were on a road trip at the time which what brought us passing through Boulder. The words speak of how Vinh and I had slept in our "capsule" van parked at a public park which we hucked disc at by moonlight the night before and how we were now waking up to a crowd of people just outside our tinted windows going to the near by church on sunday morning. And to that I wrote, "Many a night, especially when we don't have an exact place to sleep, I think about you & your travels. I think about you sleeping in the sand," referring to stories from Jennifer's travels around the globe after her grad from UCSB the year before.

week thirty-one >> "all and everything"

Blood is pumping through my soul, excitement pulsing in my fingers. We are shedding another layer of manifestation this week as we and zbook head to Santa Barbara to share our personal and collaborative narratives. Using the healing gift of story and the image exploding opportunity of power point, Cec and I are climbing up the rabbit hole to lay down some funky right brain / left brain tonic into the atmosphere of studio 1340 on the UCSB campus this Wednesday, 11/17/10 – power twin intention... activate!

The metaphor of the rabbit hole arises this week as Alice appears in pink; falling, tumbling, slipping down our red gelatinous drawing toward the web of childhood playground. I myself fell down a rabbit hole once in India. I was minding my own business, absorbing the spicey coast of Goa, India, when a young English woman named Jane showed up one afternoon saying she wasn’t sure why she had left where she had just come from. Being the incredibly helpful and insightful travelor that I am, and was, I responded, “why, you came to find me and take me back to that place from whence you came.” And so it was, that Jane and I boarded a crickety, stickity, old bus and bounced for thirteen hours across the country to Pune, India. After such a journey, we emerged into light once more, dropped at the doorstep, at the gate actually, of the OSHO Commune International. To gain entrance into this community, which I desired, I submitted to an AIDS test, negative, and soon after began a six week meditative exploration in a buddha field.

One of the guides who emerged in that time space for me, was a beautiful, round, bubbly Indian woman named Nirmala. Each night, to prepare for the evening gathering meditation, all attendees bathed and donned white robes, dresses, gowns, anything free flowing, just white. Nirmala invited herself into my shower and captured my attention with her stories. She was having an affair with a smitten Englishman and her Greek husband was aware and troubled. I believe she had been to the Ashram several times, in her youth, when the master, Bagwan Osho, was alive, and now she was back for a stay again, along with her husband, though they kept separate apartments in town. My own apartment finder had been linked to me through Jane, who had been conned into bed by the swindler on her first visit (before returning with me). He was always trying to seduce me it seemed, though I was quite guarded with my sexual energy at the time still. Nonetheless, I was very grateful to him for helping me find a little nook to call home in Puna during my stay. There was a communal hole for a toilet, and there were a few other temporary dwellers in a couple of surrounding rooms, but the main occupant of the apartment was a sweet woman who always had a smile for me and helped me feel safe and welcomed. I didn’t spend much time there, nights occasionally, it was mostly a place I could keep my belongings dry and secure.
Nirmala’s apartment, which I had the pleasure to overnight in a couple of times, was a glass-walled, wood-floored, book-laden, zen-haven. Her space overlooked the rushing river running along the town.

One morning, after a night of debauchery with some young Italian boys we had commandered, I awoke in the dawn hour, feeling very light and energized. I sat facing the river with my sketchbook and pens in hand and proceeded to engage my own deep meditation with a colored spiral drawing. After some time, Nirmala joined me by the window and our speaking commune was so entwined, that we both felt elevated into a different rhythm. Nirmala, who had a very active third eye, told me later that she could see me like a buddha. For me, it was my most enlightened moment thus far experienced in this life. Afterwards, as we joined the Italians for breakfast and then ventured to a lake retreat for the day, I felt so connected and clear headed, everything felt joyous and light, and I felt that I could see through any bullshit... it was a turning point in life for me.

During my stay at the commune, I participated in many aspects of community life, and engaged in most of the daily meditations and a couple of the special, intensified offerings. At lunch everyday, after eating, I could sit along one of the exterior corridors, and listen to a taped recording of Osho speaking. Some of the most memorable teachings came from those lunch hour sessions. Often, he would speak about people, those wise and otherwise as well. More than once, I recollect Osho referring to a man called Gurdjieff, and always he spoke with respect for his teachings. Thus, when I came across the writings of G.I Gurdjieff when I was back in LA, perousing the Bodhi tree bookstore, I took home the books and entered the worlds of “All and Everything”.
All and Everything is a three part series. The first massive part, Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson, is purportedly an avenue for dispelling the myths which the ego has enshrouded humanity in. I have not yet had the fortitude to withstand that full path. I have however, crossed the river into the second book of the series, Meetings with Remarkable Men. This series of autobiographical stories of people with whom Gurdjieff engaged in through his search of mystery knowledge across Asia, Africa and Europe is incredible and image rich. I’ve read through this part II of the series several times, and could learn from it for ever and ever no doubt. In fact, with this weeks zbook spread approaching, I picked it up from my bookshelves and entered it into my bathroom book keeper. Having re-read the introduction while enthroned, I knew I must move it into my backpack to have on my person through the coming weeks.
To end this post, I wanted to share a recent gleaning from All and Everything, 2nd series. It is said that a human must strive to keep intact both the lamb and the wolf, to be in truth with herself.

Gurdjieff shares this challenge: How can one get across the river and keep whole the wolf, the goat and the cabbage, if only one can be ferried across at a time?

The answer lies in making an extra trip!

This week, I look from the vantage of the Hawk for guidance- in awe of Earth and Sky. Please share your thoughts, experiences, flow... we’d love to hear from you!

Be well and Blessings, -Hemphill

Filling In Skeleton

vampire skeleton cake
As I polished off a slice of cherry cake tonight, I couldn't help but think about this weeks spread "external" and the postings which Ceci has been sending out. My son, Jack, has been daily intoning me with the repeated question, "Mommy, when can we make a skeleton cake?" Actually, the description changed through the past two weeks, from Halloween cake to skeleton to pirate to vampire and back to skeleton cake. As it turned out, I was not the direct aider to his cake making fulfillment, Daddy engaged the mixing and frosting brigade with Jack today, as Hallie and I took some girl time together. I had to include my pics from their success with this weeks spread, as it is incredibly reminiscent (to me at least), of the Dia De los Muertos skulls Ceci posted earlier in the week, and echoed in the face of "external".

As the title to this post suggests, my intent here, is to simply fill in a few lines. I personally get a chuckle from this cartoonish left side of the page, in the toes I filled into the candy wrapper spaces, as part of my Dino body expression. Cec and I actually lifted the yellow crinkly paper recently to check in on the drawing, to see if it went beyond what's visible, and in fact, it doesn't, it is truly a filled in space - awesome!
In her last post, Cec posed a question to me about the book from which the attached sentence on external comes from and its original reference to me. The book is, Meetings with Remarkable Men, the 3rd book in the All and Everything series of G.I. Gurdjieff, who I was turned onto via Osho when I was visiting Puna, India in October 2007, an incredible and mind boggling set of stories, which I apparently read out of order, having made attempts at the first book in the series several times and failed to penetrate it beyond pg.200. - even this past summer, I made another hopeful pass, and was successful reading aloud into the three hundreds, but not yet beyond; this round was completely different I must say, perhaps I'm beyond some levels of delusion - or perhaps, I'm swimming in them! Whatever the case, I am here, and my story is here, where I am. Where are you? -J.

week twenty three >> "veins"

"veins" click to view

Welcome Fall, welcome harvest, welcome ripeness and fulfillment and the falling away of all out-moded developments to clear the way for the next season of growth and unfoldment.

We celebrate the Autumn Equinox this week with Z page: "Veins"

words from Autumn in Richmond
It was upon reading the words atop the right, "leaves fall like organic glitter... all around, all around me... puddles of leaves up to my knees" that I remembered that this leaf came from the Church Hill streets of Richmond Virginia, where I lived for some 4 months once upon a time in 1999. It was my first east coast Fall and I lavished in the succulent colors of the season that had always shaken me to my core with renewal and utter aliveness. Perhaps because I was born around this time, at the gateway of the harvest season, when cycles complete into fruitful plenitude of life's abundance... and begin again. For me the Autumn has always been my spring; I am invigorated, ready for action, ripe, prime, and most alive.
leaf from Richmond 1999 click to view
So imagine me in Richmond where my bedroom became succulent orange from the sun lighting up the tree outside my window, or walking down my street sailing through piles of yellow and crimson. Crisp air and even crisper sunlight, like experiencing life through a crystal. I could hardly contain myself. This leaf used to be deep orange, picked up from the walkway in front of the porch of the turn of the 20th century Victorian house I shared with friends, notably our dear friend, and PSL founding father, Hutch. I feel it was Jennifer who gave it the blood red aura that now sets it off. Perhaps with her scented ink?

Beautiful Equinox to you all... happy Fall.

X BOOK !

today with added sticker from Cartagena
first page touched in XBOOK, birthed 2004
It's high time that we share with you X BOOK! Our dear 2nd book in circulation birthed in 2004... birthed at the moment that we began to bring conscious closure to ZBOOK, which was 8 years alive at that time... which still took the next 6 years to truly "wrap up."  I was still living in northern California then and so our book swapping was still active via the post and hand to hand when I'd travel to los angeles.

click these images
for large view
Only now we exchanged one for the other; one with the transitioning ZBOOK, and the other with the dawning xBOOK.   This exchange continued with more frequency after I moved to los angeles in 2006 and still today... with the added element that for the first time in 10 years Jennifer and I began to work in zBOOK side by side during our creative sessions together, in high honor of attuning to the closure of Z pages.  All the while also exchanging xBOOK.
Today xBOOK is traveling with me, here in Cartagena!  And ZBOOK is at home with Jennifer.  During this trip I came across some rad stickers (peeled off of a internet cafe wall), sparkly and, not surprisingly since this is Colombia, catholic.  The scenes are lovely as I choose to remove the dogma from them and receive from them their simple expressions of prayer, reverence, and gratitude. Plus they're shinny and glittery :)!  Here are the X pages on which these stickers now live... keep in mind that these pages are fully in progress as xBOOK swims in full circulating current between Jennifer and myself.

Look for more shares of X pages to see how these grow.

"reflection"  in ZBOOK
So super that these newly gleaned stickers come to XBOOK the week that Z page here, "reflection," also has two stickers of deities, the metallic buddha on left, the Morcheeba sticker that we got at their concert in let's see 1998 which also birthed this page, and the metallic virgin mary on right peeled off a candle in Guadalajara in 1999. RAD.

Tata

Today my grandma Tata is 99 years alive.....................................!!

Tata

When I was a super little cec I called her Tata, because I couldn't quite mouth "abuelita" which is of course "grandma" in spanish.  That became her name, even for my younger cousins.  As with all my family, Tata is from Colombia and she has lived in either Cartagena or Bogota all her life.  She was present for my birth in Mountain View, California in 1974 (the day after Tata's Bday in fact!) and stayed for a while then.... and when my parents split a couple years later she came to back to stay with me and my mom when I was 2 to 3 three years old.  My mom was working a lot and so it was me and Tata, discovering the world together; she was unfamiliar with the U.S. and I was unfamiliar with any place and so it was new and wild to us both.  Tata didn't speak engligh and I didn't speak spanish but we formed our own unspoken communication.  We gained an understanding and a intutive closeness.  A couple years later, when I was 5, I was sent to Cartagena for the summer, all on my own, to both sides of my family.  They were my family but I hardly knew a few of them, and most none at all.  But Tata was my anchor.  Not only did we have an established connection, she was the only one who was truly present with me, spoke and listened to me like a person, had a special sensibility to my needs, and understood that I was already quite independent by this age and so didn't treat me like baby.  I hadn't grown up with any Colombian culture, food, or speaking spanish so it was challenging for me... and my family who expected me to be the Colombian of my blood, but I was so very much "gringa."  I did learn spanish in those 3 months and I returned to Cartagena every summer of my youth.  Every time Tata was my bedrock.  Summers away from my parents were tough, but it was great to get to know my family and this city... and I thank god for every day with my Tata... and how amazing is it that at 36 years old (which I turn tomorrow) that I get to continue to enjoy her company!  I didn't get to grow up with her close by, but the days we get together continue to add up and I am so grateful.  Thanks to Tata who has taken such good care of herself, and thanks to her radiant health.  At 99 she has no imbalances in mind or body, not even arthritis.  Only her walking and hearing has dimmed somewhat, but she actually remains incredibly strong and agile.  Her mind and awareness are so sharp, so keen, it's mind blowing.  And she just told me that the glasses she wears don't actually help much her to see or read, she just like to wear them because she thinks they help her look nice... so her eyesight rocks too!  Tata loves to stay up late, most nights till past midnight.  Just last night as I was fading at our late night dinner table out on the town, Tata was all riled up, totally outlasting me!  Well she has outlasted most, born in 1911 ...it's fascinating to think about how the world has transformed in unimaginable ways all around her during these 99 years.

"fortune"       click to view
Last night we took a "paseo" around "El Centro" the old colonial city center of Cartagena and visited all the houses she grew up in 'till she was 30 years old.  Story after story after story flowed from her as we walked (her in a sleek transport chair we just got for her).  It was awesome.  It was just Tata and my mom and I, the 3 of us generations of daughters.  I am so grateful to both these women for the risks they took and dreams they worked so hard to realize, making it possible for me to live a life of choice and creative freedom.  Being with them both this week, listening to my abuelita's stories, receiving her wisdom, receiving my own great blessings, and being so ever grateful for my life... this is my great fortune.

happy new year Tata!  Te quiero con todo mi alma.
